Karen Mitchell, Treasurer

Karen D. Mitchell received her BA degree from Widener University in Behavioral Science and her MBA from the University of Phoenix. Ms. Mitchell’s career as director of the Office of Research Services at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSCH) spanned over 15 years. During that time she was involved with the start-up of the Intellectual Property office, managed faculty training and education in the research administration department, and had oversight of all pre-award services.

Ms. Mitchell joined University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2004 as the first director of the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research. Karen’s 10-year tenure included serving as the initial point of contact for faculty, staff, and students on all sponsored grants/contracts related matters and matters involving human subject research. She was instrumental in developing and implementing institutional policies and procedures for sponsored projects; and oversight of all aspects of IRB from reviewing to monitoring and reporting. In addition Karen Mitchell has developed training and education courses for the faculty and graduate students to broaden their knowledge of all aspects of securing extramural funding for research activities. USciences has amassed over 3 million in external funding during Karen’s appointment as director.

Currently Karen is Assistant Vice President for Research Administration at Temple University. In this capacity she oversees all aspects of grants and contracts from foundations, state and federal sponsors of research activities. She has direct oversight of the central administration office and guides institutional policies and procedures as it relates to grant and contract submissions for federal and nonfederal sponsors. Karen trains and educates the research administrators in the departments and in central administration. Karen trains staff and faculty researchers on the most advantageous approach to grant getting and been a presenter of numerous workshops on the topic
